 ART IS A JOKE

AIAJ 15: Inhibitionists "Plastic Conscience" - 2 cd-r
The fifth release (and fourth commercially available) from Art is a Joke will also turn out to be the last. I think. The first disc (or second, depending on the order you want to listen to them in) contains a half hour improvisation-over-noisy-field-recordings (a track called "Brown Brown Grass of Home"), while the other offers up a number of tracks that didn't fit in elsewhere (plus a few alternative mixes/versions of unpopular favourites.) 100% solo C.K. here.
All this could have certainly fit on just one piece of plastic, but whatever.

AIAJ 13: Inhibitionists "Acrobat Out of Hell" - c20
A cassette fer chrissakes! Limited to a mere 10 copies (a few of them have been kept or given away), this tape contains stark amateurism battling urban(e) field recordings, wind-driven percussive assaults, and smidgens of mini-organ. Created by C.K., with J.K. on two of the pieces. The titles, by the way, are "Acrobat Out of Hell", "Swine Before Pearl Jam", "Airport Convention", "Heartburn Hotel" and "Baby Got Back Into Hell".

AIAJ 12: The Inhibitionists "Sandpaper Skyscrapers" - cd-r
The final release creditted to The Inhibitionists, "Sandpaper Skyscrapers" is largely made up of recordings from the "Flypaper Airplanes" sessions. And as such, most of these tracks feature Christian Inhibitionist in wild collaboration with Funny Art Collective and Rough Ride of Crafts people. Electronica and psychedelia collide. Moroder-esque vocoders, minimalist intergalatic funk and Southeast Asian boneyard gamelan jazz slop is also "possibly" present hereupon.

AIAJ 11: The Inhibitionists "Meat Party" - cd-r
The eleventh (actually, the first) release from Art is a Joke Records, is this 36 minute home recorded avant psych pop monstrocity. More raw and emotional (if having laryngitis counts as an emotion!) than the Inhibitionists' BSBTA debut, and just as good, if not better... though maybe I'm not the best to judge my own work... even though this is not my work alone! "Meat Party" does, once again, contain much-valued musical contributions from Preston S., Steve B., Jessy K., Phil S. (Spirito, not Spector! - but Mr. Spirito was in Rex and currently fronts oRSo), Myles R. and Marc L..

CBC vinyl-01: Exquisite Russian Brides "To Increase in Size" - 12" LP
Yes, yes, yes - the vinyl version of "To Increase in Size"! (the title track is on side one, with the equally beautiful "To State That No Blame Should Be Attached to Someone" on the flip.) Highly recommended.

CBC14: The President's Heart "Loving Relationships & Sexual Magic" - cd-r
"Featuring our most scary cover yet, Loving Relationships & Sexual Magic introduces an edgier President's Heart with electric guitars, short bursts of hard rocking freakouts and vaguely 90s-sounding, distorted big beats, while still finding time for lovely acoustic interludes and some nice cover songs... including our acclaimed take on "Step By Step", originally released on the now out of print The First Limited World Tour Single (CBC-ltd01), from which - along with its counterpart, The Second Limited World Tour Single (CBC-ltd02) - a couple of the best tracks are also preserved here."

CBC13: Exquisite Russian Brides "To Increase in Size" - cd-r
"This, probably the most psychedelic release from Exquisite Russian Brides yet, contains two 26 minute live tracks recorded at Literaturhaus (a former church in Copenhagen) overdubbed with studio sessions and tightly edited to attempt some kind of "definite" version of these songs. The title track is a solo performance by main Bride, Marc Kellaway, on various instruments + voice, joined halfway through by free violinist Marie Jensen - first from the balcony though a small amplifier, then circling the audience with Kellaway (also on violin) - while a thunderstorm plays on small tape recorders. The second song is a 2-part duet for organ and accordion (Kellaway) and electric guitar (Tanja Jessen), moving from a soft wall of noise, towards melody, and back again."

CBC07: Exquisite Russian Brides "Vast Insect Calculating Machine of the Enemy" - cd-r
"Vast Insect" transforms sounds from the sessions resulting in "Skylight" (CBC06) into something more heavy and ugly, and presents the results in short bursts with emphasis on noise, texture and beats. The first pressing (pictured, and sold out) has a painted cover done with black ink and red acrylic paint. The second pressing (for sale here) might have different artwork.

CBC06: Exquisite Russian Brides "Skylight" - cd-r
"The basis for this, Marc Kellaway's third Exquisite Russian Brides release, was a number of solo- and duo-(with Tanja Jessen on the electrified guitar)-improv-sessions from the Winter and Spring of 2004. While ERB's self titled debut was looming and massive, "Skylight" is more minimal at times, more noisy at times and more melodic at times. Listen with headphones, and moving clouds up above."

CBC05: The Cat Box Quartet "Peppermint Sleep" - cd-r
"The Cat Box Quartet presents 6 tracks loosely centered around sleep and dreaming. From the soothing dreamscape for trumpet, organ and broken electronics of "The Figure 5 in Solid Gold" to the lullaby for slide guitar and "Benighted"'s mass of processed strings, this is CBQ at its most melodic. Comes in a handmade cover with original ink painting on braille paper."

CBC04: Exquisite Russian Brides "As For Now" - cd-r
"Finished at the same time as the first release (CBC02), this is the second selection of sounds from Exquisite Russian Brides. An experiment with recycling of the original material into shorter selections with emphasis on beats, melodies and sine tones, that makes everything slightly darker along the way. Handmade cover with ink prints."

CBC03: The President's Heart "The Supreme Record" - cd-r
No more than a few months after the release of their debut "Goodwill is Everywhere...", The President's Heart put out this little gem! "The Supreme Record" is actually more pop, more happy, and more amateurish (meant in the best possible way) than their debut BSBTA release. And it's packaged in a seven-inch(!) homemade cardboard cover with an appropriately strange/arty photo glued to the front. Hot stuff!

CBC02: Exquisite Russian Brides "Exquisite Russian Brides" - cd-r
Yet another Marc Kellaway (Cat Box Quartet / Vinyl Dog Joy / 75 Magic Tricks) project! This time, it comes in the shape of a single 31-minute untitled drone track. But an interesting, progressive one... incorporating field recordings and ambient sensibilities. Each cover photo is unique, by the way.

ESR 007: Elektronavn "Audelà l'inconnu (vertical) / For Theo Angelopoulos" - cd-r
Features two tracks: 1. "Audelà l'inconnu (vertical)": A classical soprano (Trine Vestergaard), a medieval hurdy-gurdy player (Søren Hammerlund) and an impro-guitarist (Stephan Sieben) were - one by one - asked to improvise in a long tunnel under some railway tracks in the south western part of Copenhagen. Elektronavn (Magnus O. Majmon) recorded it, computerized it and composed a work where each part/layer is presented horizontally [ESR 006] and later on this work, where the parts have been mixed to a hybrid vertical collage track. 2. "For Theo Angelopoulos": This work was previously released as 'forme' but has now been given a new name corresponding more to its sounding allusions. Total time: 29:45.

ESR 002: Elektronavn "Rationale Mystique" - cd-r
Darker and more minimal than "I-IV, VII", Magnus Olsen Majmon (aka. Elektronavn)'s second release is a bit more demanding of its listener (or is it?) - but the results of listening will, ultimately, be rewarding. Heavily utilizing field recordings, electronic outbursts and mysterious samples, headphones are - also in this case - recommended.

POOR008: Heartbreak Basement "Too Plain to Be a Friend" - cd-r
The long-awaited fourth album from M. Steckhahn and Christoffer E. (issued in 2001) contains four new tracks, three covers (including Jesus & Mary Chain's "Take It"), one re-recording, and six older songs from the three previous HB-releases. The new recordings are, as a first, done on a four-track, which has allowed the duo to experiment with various new exciting techniques and instrumentation!

POOR003: Heartbreak Basement "Deborah Sugareyes" - cd-r

POOR002: Heartbreak Basement "Mariah Rustyfuck" - cd-r
The second Heartbreak Basement album of 1998 (and often cited as a Danish lo-fi classic) is characterized by great songs, weird keyboard sounds and hiphop-esque rhythms, as well as several instrumental pieces. And most of it was improvised along the way! Mariah Rustyfuck also contains the "Dying Radio Host", as heard on BSBTA's Furballs of Frustration compilation.

POOR001: Heartbreak Basement "Lola Vita" - cd-r
The debut album from the cult Copenhagen duo of Christoffer Ericsen and Mads Steckhahn, released in 1998. (An ultra rare release, hence the band's asking price.) While they mention Sebadoh, Sonic Youth and Eric's Trip as influences, Heartbreak Basement have their own very characteristic style, playing dreamy, often melancholy indie rock/pop, with avant-noise tendencies and a drum machine.

 MISCELLANEOUS LABELS/SELF-RELEASED

cryptic scenery "Oceanic Feeling" - CD
A beautifully dark, melodic album, which is, in a way, cryptic scenery's most accessible, but is, in every way, recommended! Released in 1999, this factory pressed CD presents the band's (back when they were a band) own brand of ethereal epics, darkwave rock and low key minimalist pop.

Inhibitionists "Concession Strings" - cd-r
"From Christian Kann, head honcho at BSBTA, comes this gorgeous collection of abstract sonic assemblages. Spiraling plumes and sheeting alien blasts lay out like the rooms in some grand mansion, filled with fuzzy visions and cloudy memories… broken music built into dark places… making for a deeply immerse and rewarding journey. Comes with artwork by the Inhibitionists and felt innards."

mr60 "EP3: Springtime?" - cd-r

mr60 "EP2: Alaska Dancehall" - cd-r
Contains tracks like "12 PM: Tell Me the Place" and "Valentine Sixties", which were a big part of what turned yours truly onto this band, and citing them as one of 2003's Great Discoveries. Melancholy, charming, and slightly country-fied roots-indie with male and female vocals, and a weeping violin. If I had to recommend just one "pre-Ugly Dog Syndicate" mr60 release to you, this would be it.
