Tang Under Broen
"Der er for langt at sige at der ikke er langt nok"
Tang Under Broen's second mini-collection of Danish language songs is, on average, darker and less experimental / noisy compared to 2001's En hyldest til jordnøddesmør (BSBTA #6). Sure, demons are real, but Der er for langt... has its humourous and crazy moments as well (which, now that I think of it, could be mistaken - because of the predominant tone on the record - for interpretations of delirious semi-psychosis. Perhaps it could pass as a soundtrack to a low budget Danish cartoon version of Donnie Darko?!). But, a nice mix of cheeky indie pop, clever lyrics about love, self-esteem and consumerism, with ethereal goth-ambient tendencies, it is. If I may be so humble :-) Oh, and the title track is a new version of that minor (mp3-only) cult hit from a few years back.

Jacob Faurholt
"Black Buildings"
Five short, but quite moving songs make up Århus-based Jacob Faurholt's second release (and first for BSBTA). Roots/Americana-tinged melancholy singer-songwriter music... you know the keywords... but there's more to it than that. The simple guitar, bass and keyboard accompaniment gives everything a special bedroom ambiènce, while, at times, digitally distorted vocals create eerily beautiful forcefields of phonetic colour... even black.

1. Alone With You 2. I Don't Mean All of Us 3. As the Ship Came In 4. Trees Are Shaking 5. Having Fun

The President's Heart
"Goodwill is Everywhere, and the Lighthearted Song of the Gondoliers is Heard in the Distance" Goodwill is Everywhere, and the Lighthearted Song of the Gondoliers is Heard in the Distance (a title taken from a Donald Barthelme novel; 'The President's Heart' actually comes from there as well) is a substantial piece of work, assembled by Copenhagen-based electronic musician Dorothy Parker, utilizing samples of Århus-based Vita Wrapovitz's and Kount Krickett's recordings. Vita and Kount's music, with its anti-pop pop attitude intact, is represented in short, wacky pieces made with, amongst other things, a ukulele, flute, t.v. noise, melodica and girl / boy vocals... later being rearranged and manipulated into dark disco hits! It's avantgarde without being affected. It's what Easy Listening For the 21st Century ought to be.

1. Overture 2. Massed Oranged Flags at the Head of the Column 3. Kitty Tongue 4. Box Office Mail Bomb 5. Flashback 6. Distant Fingers From the Rebel Forces 7. Showcase 8. David Neuer "You Neuer Know: The Music of David Neuer"
You Neuer Know is meant to be the definitive collection of "old school" David Neuer songs / non-songs (released on numerous albums and EPs in 2001-2002)... or, at least, a very good introduction. The tracks in question - selected by DN himself - are mastered from the original tapes (or second generation tapes at least), and therefore sound as good as they can sound (yet, this disc is not for the lo-fi-phobic!). Two previously unreleased pieces round out the nearly 70 minute compilation, which takes you through gently warped acoustic balladry, psychedelic musique noir and undefinable, non-melodic weirdness.

frail stars
"short. (Postcards From the Plastic Planet Crashed Spaceship Pilot, Part 1)"
frail stars' debut 6-song instrumental EP, "short...", is just that (while hardly the shortest release on BSBTA). However, the EP gives you a good idea of what the solo project/band is/are all about. The music is reminiscent of certain loud/calm Scottish bands, but only slightly. Here, distorted guitars, minimalist drums and effects galore are handled in a different and - yes - personal way... without being weird or experimental as such. And "short..." is a splendid little collection, if I may say so myself.

Kristian Thomsen "Bastard Lovesongs"

Kristian Thomsen presents four (bastard love) songs here, which are quite a departure from his experimental (later, defunct) project, Reject66. Two blasting punk rock songs (each, with a slight Lou Reed-y lilt, more or less) and two frail, minimal acoustic songs (recorded on a dictaphone). Yes.

Shaw "Hope and Despair"

Acoustic / electric guitar-pop songs with very catchy tunes and lyrics are what you can expect from Hope and Despair, the debut album by Englishman David Shaw. While the influences of British pop/rock are audible, Shaw's sound is warm and personal (thanks, as always, to - among other things - the intimacy of the home studio); he isn't afraid of experimenting or adding other instruments (organ, drum machine) into the mix either. Did I mention that Mr. Shaw writes good songs?

This single is only a small taste of things to come. As the title indicates, the CD contains "Morning Dew", and the Swedish "Postkort"- two songs that emanate rays of melodic sunshine and mellow euphoria (euphony). They are, in fact, among the most accessible songs ever released by BSBTA...

David Neuer "Monsieur Moldrigani finder den eneste sande vej til poesiens hjerte"
A(nother) must-have for Neuer-fans! This EP contains almost all of the early Danish-language recordings that David Neuer is satisfied with, meaning (just!) ten selections from 1991-2000. One of the stand-out tracks is "Noed i mit hode" ("Somethin' in My Hed" (sic), I guess), which has a pop ambience unlike anything we've heard from Neuer before (not including Defenders of the 49th Parallel :-)). It could make a fine (indie) radio hit, if more of today's DJs would bother with songs that last less than two minutes.

"Dribble søg... dårligere end godt, men bedre end dårligt"

"Dribble søg..." is taken from late 2002's Fragmenter af flaurpaust (BSBTA #38). This CD single also contains re-recordings of the three other Fragmenter songs that use the same melody as "Dribble søg..." - here, they're labelled as Dribble søg... parts 2, 3 and 4, as opposed to their original titles: Pausebillede 1, 2 and 3 respectively. And the melody? If you like sentimental Dansktop country (in a lo-fi stylee, mind you), I guess you can do no better than to check this single out.

BSBTA #38
David Neuer "Fragmenter af flaurpaust"
Fragmenter af flaurpaust was certainly a Danish-language lo-fi/no-fi concept album - a sort of audio tabloid or a musical portrayal of sensationalism, including short songs and long radio plays - satirical, theatrical, and loads of fun. DN recorded these tracks (many, in fact, being improvised on the spot) in an alarmingly short period of time...
a very manically creative period of time. Additionally, at least an hour's worth of material, originally intended for this set - but deemed unfit by DN himself - remains unreleased. Fragmenter af flaurpaust was printed in a limited edition of 100 copies (plus extras) - most, which were given away to friends, acquaintances and local celebrities(!).

Christian H. Sötemann "The Kick-Out Disc"

A powerful voice and a reverberating guitar is all that's needed to make an as dramatic and intimate release as this. Very limited edition, and packaged in a pop-out (aka: kick-out) case, the EP includes "Kick Out the Disc", which shows CHS from his - up to now - most vocally aggressive side, plus the in-a-different-way-dramatic "The Surface is Blank". Round off the disc is "Arbitrarily Often Geschreddert", an instrumental piece that strengthens the fact that good guitar pieces are often those, that sound as if guitars aren't even being used in them! (If you enjoyed Four Crescent Figures (BSBTA #21) pieces such as "Requiem - 1988" and "Peninsula", then "Arbitrarily..." is for you!)

Branta Ïx "Poppalotta"

Besides the rather upbeat Pippi Longstocking-esque title, the Poppalotta EP is the closest Branta Ïx has come to pop music. The eleven brief pieces (with daft titles like "Lazy Line Sniffer Jane", "The Empire's Back on Strike", and "Rumsfeld & Coca-Cola") are also more electronic than previous Branta-recordings - music-making software and virtual synths were used (and fucked with), while hardly any analogue sounds / sources were utilized.

A mysterious man *cough*David Neuer*cough* with a curiously titled EP. The songs on What's Inner Voice are clean, crisp and simple (in a good way, of course), while being slightly melancholy and lyrically reflective. The cd-r's packaging is also quite clever, so we've been told.

As a suitable epilogue to The Kick-Out Disc (BSBTA #37), Golden Ether offers two ambient (to say the least) guitar pieces. The title track, plus "Rehte Nedlog" (essentially "Golden Ether" backwards) create a relaxing, dream-like, but still somewhat decadent atmosphere.

Defenders of the 49th Parallel
"Don't Let the Kommies Get a Hold of This"
Did you ever think you'd hear David Neuer backed by drowsy drum n' bass beats or sitar loops? Or Christian Kann singing along to a vacuum cleaner? Now you can hear just that, among many other things, on Don't Let the Kommies Get a Hold of This, which is, in fact, a collaboration between Neuer and Kann. The two have made a mixture of spoken word, esoteric avant-indie and home recorded improvisations... and they were never in the same room while this went on! One is therefore reminded of the working techniques on Musical Chain Letters - and that, as proven, is an a-okay way to work... chaos notwithstanding!

In addition to the five original pieces, this new edition also features two bonus tracks - previously unheard fragments of the piece "Rain Music", and a new (2003) version of "The Closed Castle". Los Flying Fallaflers "Is There Something We Forgot to Sound?"

David Neuer and his friend Asger Holmgaard, made weird vocal sounds and had abstract conversations in 1995. Not originally intended for release, the project has been, by DN, named Los Flying Fallaflers - one of the band names the duo came up with in another of their many 'conversation sessions'. This session was the only one that was ever recorded; the almost completely unedited 17 minutes were recorded on a cassette machine by David - without Asger knowing about it... If you've heard the David Neuer pieces "What About" and "Orthopedian", you'll have a bit of an idea of what "Is There Something..." is. Otherwise, prepare to be baffled!
