David Neuer "Mr. Anybody's Anthems"

Could this, then, be Mr. Neuer's most accessible release to date? Perhaps his breakthrough?!? It ought to be. Apart from a few unaccompanied non-music improvisations, it's a pretty clean n' clear collection... Lots of singer-songwriter/blues-y stuff... possibly something even fans of Mr. Banhart, Mr. Molina, Mr. Waits, and... Mr. Faurholt would be into. (It's still as lo-fi as ever, in case you care about things like that.)

cryptic scenery "Sedatives"

A brief collection of intimate lo-fi recordings. The now classic "Sedatives" (here, a re-recording featuring electric guitar and more aggressive vocals) is followed by some equally fine guitar or piano driven songs - quite melodic and atmospheric. A perfect companion / epilogue to Ontic (BSBTA #56)... and an exciting prologue to cryptic scenery's next album, I guess!

sfu·ma·to "The Las Zadan E.P."
Four tracks. Possibly recorded on a four-track, at Rock Island (where half of the so-called Copenhagen underground scene has its practice spaces, it seems). This time, sfu·ma·to is Lars Ro, backed by Andreas (bass), Asger (drums) of Ensemble Orlando and Traening respectively, in addition to Traening's / Danband's Marie (vocals)... adding new (lo-fi and stylistic) dimensions to the ever-delightful scrapiness of the sfu-ma-to sound. More immediately indie than Shards of Ancient Suns (BSBTA #24), and more accessible than most anything they have ever recorded previously, this EP contains three reworkings of classic sfu·ma·to songs, plus the new (classic) "What Keeps You Up At Night?"

David Neuer "Open Door to Heartshakes"

Open Door To Heartshakes is a typical David Neuer title. The EP, however, has both typical and atypical Neuer songs on it: from the melodic and enjoyable "Mister Green", to the eerie Someone's Gotta Be Good (BSBTA #15)-era "From the Town Folks' Reunion". If you already own a few of Neuer's releases, you might recognise some of the new re-recordings included here...

Shaw "Yin Yang"
Twelve new lectures in Homespun Pop, as taught by Professor Shaw. Highlights include the tender, beautiful "Little Ones" (the only track on the album with guest musicians), "I Won't Let It Lie" (a slightly punk-ish, upbeat backbeat piece), "There's a Road" (more down home than backbeat, actually) and "Sad Individual" (which is as close as Shaw gets to melancholy blokes like Thom Yorke or Robin Proper-Sheppard... while boasting one of the best guitar solos of 2004). And that, folks, is just the tip of the iceberg!

Shaw "Over Too Soon"

The epic-like, yet down-home-esque acoustic "Over Too Soon" appears on Shaw's second album, Yin Yang, while the more portastudio-trickery laden "Beautiful Girl" is exclusive to this single-disc. The songs complement each other well - topically and stylistically. Reflective and warm, in a Paul Simon / Elliott Smith / Bevis Frond sort of way (if we must make comparisons)...

Jacob Faurholt "Turn the Lights On"
Less 'bedroom' and more 'studio' than previously, the "Turn the Lights On" EP presents Jacob Faurholt in an acoustic... light, with, at times, outroverted (though still in a Faurholt sort of way) vocals! And yet, this time, producer Marc Kellaway added his own experimental (complementing, not dominating) touches, giving the music - simultaneously - spectacular and intimate ambiènces. Rootsy and urban, like. This EP's version of "Let Them Go" is an absolute classic, by the way.

The Corners of Nowhere "Poisoned By Zinc"
This one can be tough to categorize at times. To make it easy, though, we'll say "a largely drone-oriented affair, with elements of dub, trippy raga and 'treated' guitars". None of the quirky pop, vocals or upbeat beats from the group's previous outing are evident here! Hurrah for reinventing yourself! PS: We dig it.

Branta Ïx "Gnotobot"

Gnotobot, the second Branta (Aix, Ix, Ïx, whatever) full length, picks up where the previous release, Poppalotta (BSBTA #36) left off. That is, in the form of short semi-electro-pop/rock pieces, laced with distorted preset samples, looped beats and general synthetic madness. However, elements from previous, more lo-fi Branta outings are mixed in, adding an even more eclectic pattern to the sonic tapestry: minimalist guitars, home recorded (analogue) sounds and kitsch-y fun-noise! There are even a few reworkings / remixes of Poppalotta tunes here... so dig in!

Tilbury On Cloves "Tilbury On Cloves"

The Greek duo Tilbury On Cloves' self-titled debut full length (after a number of compilation appearances and a split 7") is made up of a plethora of discreetly progressing dream-like cascades, gentle / experimental electro(nic) assaults and chiming nu-shoegazer passages, accented by demure, mopey vocals. Some will say "lo-fi post-rock", others will say "nu-shoegazer". We say "hurrah!"... while humbly categorizing it as "an interesting example of Mediterranean melancholia".

A single-taster from the forthcoming, much-anticipated (don't we always say that?!) self-titled album from the Greek duo Tilbury On Cloves. cryptic scenery "Ontic"

Everything is. As is Ontic. It's more song-oriented, intimate, and stripped down (especially, compared to the previous cryptic scenery release of new material, Four Crescent Figures (BSBTA #21)), yet there are plenty of directions to keep you happy here as well: from the reverb-laden "The Old Bike", to the spoken word / atmospheric keyboard piece "Loose Conception of Greenland", to the instrumental Frippertronics-esque "Omnipresent" (reminiscent of what you can hear on cs's 3-inch The Singing Machine, released on the Retina Scan label). Of course, Ontic is a 100% solo effort - with Christian H. Sötemann having written, played, sung and recorded everything. It's about minimalism, presence and being. And Ontic (only BSBTA's second ever factory pressed CD) should certainly be present in your collection too, if you're that way inclined.

cryptic scenery "The Playground of the World"
While the title track - a hymn with just keyboard and vocals - is a splendid preview of the album Ontic, all the pieces on this release fit well together - making for an exceptionally complete 'half-length'... a mini-collection of highlights. Ending the disc is "Under the Trees" (a re-recording of a song off cryptic scenery's 1997 self-released Next To Mirror and Tealight cassette), with its beautiful synth-washes and underlying field recordings. All in all, the four exclusive tracks only make checking out The Playground of the World even more worthwhile. Especially if you like slightly dark, melodic 'minimalist' music.

Christian H. Sötemann "Seems Ancient to Me"

On April 21, 2003, Christian H. Sötemann took on his own challenge of interpreting some songs he had written in the late 1980s / early 1990s. The resulting album, Seems Ancient To Me, is a strong collection of songs recorded at home, using just an acoustic guitar and vocals. Musically, you will be treated to the hush semi-Cohenesque "Leaving My Home", the wild "Repent", and the rather catchy "Rotterdam" and "Are There Skyscrapers?", among other classics...

The Silver Quickies "Silver Shit"

A brief, yet cute... uh, I mean... silly set of rock n' roll tunes. Guitarists Ole Silver and Tommy Silver (no bass = damn trendy), lay down, along with drummer David Silver, the grooves for Christian Silver to sprinkle his experimental vocal / lyrical antics over. The (unedited) instrumental parts are from a tape made in 2000; the vocals were added in 2003. Imagine a combination of Hendrix, Dickinson, Hammill and Pollard singing slightly innuendous, skewed Sir Mix-a-Lot-esque lyrics, backed by a high school rock band who've just shared their first joint...

t3H pH4nt0m ph00ts0uL35 "...Play Umbilical Chords"
This, the debut album - but not really - from Tha Phantom Phootsoules, is quite a mesmerizing affair, yet also one of the most danceable releases in the BSBTA catalogue. Hip-hop samples, (s)mashed up block-rockin' beats (in gothesque attire), and skewed loops are tossed up with manipulated vocal samples and an acoustic guitar. In fact, most of the compositions on ...Play started out as simple guitar pieces, later being 'remixed' and overdubbed like mad, while still retaining the original concept of "umbilical chords" ('amateurish' guitar playing). In some compositions, the guitar is well integrated into the mix. In others, the experiment didn't exactly succeed. And Tha Phantom Phootsoules / teh phant0m ph00ts0ules / t3H pH4nt0m ph00ts0uL35 wouldn't have it any other way.

David Neuer "...Fortolker Tang Under Broens `En hyldest til jordnøddesmør´"
David Neuer all of a sudden got the idea that he wanted to cover some Tang Under Broen songs. Two days later, all of the fifteen songs from Tang Under Broen's 2001 Danish-language EP "En hyldest til jordnøddesmør" (A tribute to peanut butter, hardee har har) had been recorded in stellar no-fi, with Mr. Neuer utilizing his own melodies and compositions. To quote Tang Under Broen: "The simple acoustic guitar/voice songs and more complex, heavily overdubbed renditions add perfect balance; David's versions are at least as good as the originals."
